Call for Papers / Research Participants

Seeking Research Participants

Currently, I am working on my master’s thesis for my Masters of Science in Education degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages via the University of Southern Maine in the United States. My thesis focuses on how native language and culture influences the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language (and of English-speaking cultures).

As part of my thesis, I am surveying Japanese English teachers (currently teaching or retired) and former Japanese English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students. I am asking their perspectives on how their learning or teaching of English (and English-speaking cultures) may have been influenced by the native languages and cultures of their students/teachers. By examining the combination of these two factors, current and future EFL teachers can gain a better understanding of how to navigate EFL teaching; students can gain insights into how they learn; and administrators can better consider native language and culture when evaluating EFL programs and hiring EFL teachers.

About the survey: The survey is administered through Google Forms, and the link is in the attached PDF and also above this paragraph. At the beginning of the survey, there is the consent form, which participants must agree to if they wish to complete the survey. The survey will take 30 minutes or less. Direct contact with the researcher (myself) is not required but is possible if there are any questions or concerns.

Other information: Participant data will be kept as confidential as the use of technological services allows. Participants may withdraw at any time and have their data deleted. There is no compensation for participating in this study. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Southern Maine, and it complies with Japan’s APPI research requirements.
