This workshop is designed for English teachers who are familiar with the CEFR proficiency levels (A1–C2), often linked to tests such as GTEC, TOEFL, and TOEIC, but who would like to deepen their understanding of what lies behind them and learn practical ways to integrate them into their own teaching contexts.

本ワークショップは、CEFRの熟達度レベル（A1～C2）について、GTEC・TOEFL・TOEICなどの試験との関連で一定の知識を持つ英語教師を対象に、その背景にある教育理念への理解を深めるとともに、自身の授業実践に効果的に取り入れるための実践的な方法を学ぶことを目的としています。

Workshop Overview

The CEFR, first published in 2001 and updated in 2020 with the Companion Volume, provides more than just proficiency levels. It draws on research in communicative, sociocultural, and ecological approaches to language learning. It views learners as social agents and promotes an action-oriented approach, supported by practical “Can do” descriptors of communicative competence.

CEFRは2001年に発表され、2020年に補遺版によって拡張・更新されましたが、単なる熟達度指標にとどまるものではありません。言語学習におけるコミュニカティブ・アプローチ、社会文化的アプローチ、生態学的アプローチに関する研究に基づいています。また、学習者を社会的行為者として捉え、「Can do」記述子に基づく行動中心アプローチを重視しています。

In this workshop, participants will:

  1. Develop a deeper understanding of the CEFR’s philosophical foundations, including the action-oriented approach, and explore the structure and purpose of the “Can do” descriptors.
  2. Learn practical and principled ways to incorporate CEFR descriptors into curriculum design and classroom teaching.
  3. Collaboratively design action-oriented lessons through a hands-on workshop, using “Can do” descriptors to align learning objectives, classroom tasks, and assessment in a coherent and meaningful way.

本ワークショップでは、以下のことを行います。

  1. 行動中心アプローチを含むCEFRの理念的基盤について理解を深めるとともに、「Can do」記述子の構造と役割を探究する。
  2. CEFRの記述子をカリキュラム設計および授業実践に取り入れるための、実践的かつ体系的な方法を学ぶ。
  3. 体験型ワークショップを通して、「Can do」記述子を活用し、学習目標・授業活動・評価を一貫性と意味のある形で結びつけた行動中心アプローチに基づく授業を協働的に設計する。

By the end of the workshop, participants will gain both conceptual insight and practical strategies to use the CEFR more effectively and confidently in their teaching contexts.

本ワークショップを通して、参加者はCEFRを自身の教育現場において、より効果的かつ自信をもって活用するための理論的理解と実践的方略の両方を身につけることを目指します。

Dr. Noriko Nagai　永井典子

Nagai headshot

Noriko Nagai is Professor Emerita and a Specially Appointed Researcher at Ibaraki University. She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Michigan and taught at Duke University. At Ibaraki, she led major reforms of the English language program aligned with the CEFR and conducted multiple JSPS-funded research projects on the integration of the CEFR in Japanese higher education. She is the first author of CEFR-informed Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (Springer), and the co-editor of Critical, Constructive Assessment of CEFR-informed Language Teaching in Japan and Beyond (Cambridge University Press), as well as co-editor and co-author of Putting the CEFR into Practice through Action Research (Springer).

Dr. Maria Gabriela Schmidt

Maria Gabriela Schmidt is Special Appointed Professor at Nihon University, College of Humanities and Sciences, Department of German Linguistics and Literature, Tokyo. She holds a Ph.D. in General and Comparative Linguistics from the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz (Germany). She taught Linguistics and German Language and Culture at Mainz University (Germany), at Dankook University (Seoul, South-Korea) and at various universities in Japan: Tsukuba University, Dokkyo University, Reitaku University, Chuo University and others. She is co-founder and actual president of JALT CEFR LP SIG, co-founder and co-editor of the CEFR Journal -Research and Practice and has been involved in numerous JSPS-funded research projects on the CEFR and its benefits for Learning, Teaching and Assessing in Japan and beyond, enjoying the fruitful cooperation (publications see above Noriko Nagai).
